As the Contest Captain, you will be responsible for the team’s primary strategies and coordination of the contest. The Solar Decathlon Europe is a competition based on 10 different contests, and as the Contest Captain, you will be the responsible person for demonstrating the compliance of equipment and appliances with the rules for the competition. You will be closely involved with the design teams, making sure that they are compliant with all the rules.
As a member of the envelope team, you will be responsible for handling pre-construction tasks for the envelope of the whole prototype, including different facade systems. Pre-construction tasks include cost controlling, the management of both the supply chain and the construction schedule and health & safety aspects of the project. As part of the pre-construction team, you’ll work closely with the other pre-construction members as well as our cost and construction manager to assure a smooth transition from design to construction phase. Moreover you’ll work closely together with our general contractor, and suppliers as well as our design team. Relevant (working) experience in pre-construction as well as proficiency in the Dutch language are beneficial for this role but are not essential.
As the model maker, you will be the main person responsible for creating the architectural models for our team. You will create 3D representatives of our building design and prototype, to create a physical feel for how our project will develop. After the summer this function will become a flexible position, that is why you will also help the design team. If you are creative and interested to use your theoretical knowledge in practice, then this is your chance!
As a member of the Partners and Budget committee, you will be looking for new partners or other business opportunities. It is only possible to make our daring ideas a reality with the help of amazing companies. Because only together we can make the best strategies and products by sharing ideas, experiences and resources.
As an envelope designer you will give our building a visual identity. Your background should be architectural and you should have an interest in facade development. Together with our envelope and PV engineers you will develop and design the facade of the prototype in two parts. (1) The lightweight topup gets a facade with building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) following the principles of circular design. (2) The renovation facade relates to the existing brick in combination with integrated biodiversity and circular building principles. This work includes a close collaboration with the envelope partner in developing a biobased solution for prefabricated facade modules.
As the site designer, you will design and develop the site plan for our prototype. You will help with the design of the deck, planters, seating places and mobility hub, together with our partners. You will work on modelling the design in Revit and help with pre-construction to prepare for our site design to actually be built. This is your opportunity to use your theoretical knowledge in practice!
You will develop a structural design for the ground floor and circulation core of our prototype. By incorporating the structure not as an independent element, but as a whole integrated part, we will reach the project's narrative. SUM aims for a flexible, modular, sustainable, affordable and circular design and therefore structural design. For this role, you will design and calculate, together with structural companies, the different structural elements for an actual build prototype.
As the Climate Systems Designer, you will design and develop innovative ventilation and heating systems for our prototype together with our partners. You will work on integrating and dimensioning the mechanical equipment for a two-storey residential prototype that will be actually built. This is your opportunity to use your theoretical knowledge in practice!
As the Building Management System Designer (BMS), you will be responsible for developing an innovative way to monitor and control various smart building applications in our prototype. You will design a system that can monitor and regulate the building's electrical and mechanical equipment such as power systems, lighting, and ventilation that will optimize the energy efficiency in a two-storey residential prototype. This is your opportunity to use your theoretical knowledge in practice, learn from our industry partners, and gain valuable experience as a BMS designer!
You will take over the energy analysis of our design. You will work in collaboration with all the other committees of SUM in order to develop further the existing parametric model, evaluate the different design options and reach the most efficient design solutions. As the competition approaches, more detailed evaluations of the comfort of the prototype are also becoming an essential part of the role. With the assistance of our computational design partners OMRT, you will develop the main energy model and different sub-models to reach a comprehensive energy and comfort analysis. Taking over this role, you will have the chance to participate in the actual construction of the prototype, in which you will analyze and compare the results of your digital simulations with the in-situ measurements.
As the Hydraulic Engineer, you will be working on the concept and design of sanitary and storm control networks, the dimensioning of pumping equipment and water storage systems, the calculation of demand for drinking and/or treated water, the designing of the hydraulic network, storage tanks, stormwater harvesting system and the dimensioning of the hot water system and the recirculation system for all the HVAC. Together with our partners you will design these hydraulic systems for a prototype that we will build ourselves.
